Chris Karampahtsis, MD
Biography
Chris Karampahtsis, MD, MPH, is a Harvard trained, dually board-certified child & adolescent psychiatrist. Currently an adjunct assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Long Island School of Medicine, he now brings his wealth of academic and clinical experience to seeing pediatric and adolescent patients at his private practice.
Prior to private practice, Dr. Karampahtsis served as the Director of Medical Education at NYU Langone Hospital – Long Island’s Department of Psychiatry and is credited as the founding Psychiatry Clerkship Director for the NYU Long Island School of Medicine. Dr. Karampahtsis remains on the faculty and continues to educate the next generation of medical students and residents.
"Dr. K," as many of his patients call him, has worked in a variety clinical settings; serving as Unit Chief for psychiatric inpatient, consult -liaison and emergency room service psychiatrist, and has performed a vast amount of outpatient psychiatric evaluations of all patient populations.
Dr. Karampahtsis’ clinical approach is steeped in the importance of a thorough psychiatric evaluation that is patient-centered. This comprehensive and holistic approach was taught and evolved while training with experts in Boston's renowned psychiatric/neuroscientific academic community. He is known for being empathic, sensitive and compassionate - and for emphasizing collaborative and shared decision making with patients, families and other treating physicians. Dr. Karampahtsis practices conservative medication management and values the importance of utilizing various forms of psychotherapy for patients to enhance their coping strategies. He has expertise in treating ADHD, Depression, Autism, and Anxiety with experience in treating the full range of psychiatric disorders. Dr. Karampahtsis adopts a structured approach with regular follow-up to anticipate interventions to optimize his patient’s mental health.
